BIOGRAPHY
L. Mikelle Standbridge was born 1965 in Los Angeles, USA and studied at San Francisco State University (B.F.A. 1992), University of Paris (2 year exchange), and University of Chicago (M.F.A. 1996). Currently living and working between Biella and Milan, Italy, Standbridge’s artistic practice is photography-based, where the role and nature of photography are explored through photo-objects or small sculptural installations. Not satisfied with flat prints under glass, she often prints double sided, or stitches pieces together, or adds paper hinges to allow for moving parts. Treated with a patina that gives a leather like texture and allows for handling, the works of art are designed to be touched and interpreted as an extension of the body. The last two series, “Photo-Bodies: In Between the Edges of a Stitched Soul” and “Shoebox Stories: The Eclipse of Family Histories and Surrogate Memory Tropes”, both address how haptics and photography in the form of held objects can enrich content, by having double identities as image and form.
Standbridge is represented by the Milan-based gallery, Gli Eroici Furori – Contemporary Art, and has had multiple shows sponsored by the City of Milan and been exhibited in many international exhibitions, such as Galerie Huit in Arles, Fr., Immix Gallery in Paris, Fr. and Yiwei Gallery, Venice, Calif., USA. Her work is in many private collections such as Jackie Morgan, Phillipe Browning, Kerry Marshal, as well as the Library of Paris. Her recognitions include a scholarship to the University of Chicago, finalist for “Nikon Talent”, Portfolio Winner and exhibition for The European Festival of Nude Photography (FEPN) in Arles, Finalist for “Triennale della Fotografia Italiana”, Venezia, It., and Finalist for ‘Art Photography’ by Lens Culture.
Standbridge is also the founder and director of the non-for-profit Casa Regis – Center for Culture and Contemporary Art in Biella, It., where she hosts residencies and curates exhibitions.
